The hashtag #BlackLivesMatter went viral in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. The brutal murder of George Floyd on May 25th, 2020, by a white police officer in Minneapolis, MN, sparked mass protests across the United States in the middle of a virulent pandemic. The sheer scale of the protest that ensued, the broad support it has garnered across the globe and the active participation of people from every walk of life has rekindled the hope in many, that the United States will finally and comprehensively address the systemic racism that has severely damaged its moral standing in the world. Damien Atkins, the General Counsel for The Hershey Company in conversation with Pandemic Punditry, examines the issues that the Black Lives Matter protest has brought to the forefront by discussing the insidious nature and extent of systemic racism and what individuals and companies can do to fight endemic racism.
